Its impact is amplified by the rapid spread on digital platforms – false claims can reach millions within minutes. So, understanding why people believe this misinformation is critical, not just for mitigating its harm, but also for fostering informed, resilient societies.
The consequences extend beyond individual beliefs; they affect collective actions and policy outcomes. For instance, during the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, false narratives about voter fraud occurred, leading to widespread distrust in democratic processes. Andmisinformation about health practices during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to public health crises. These examples underscore the urgency: we must examine the psychological mechanisms that make individuals susceptible to believing falsehoods. It’s about the human tendency to prioritise emotional resonance over factual accuracy. Psychological research reveals that misinformation often exploits cognitive biases; for example, confirmation bias leads people to seek out information that aligns with their preexisting beliefs. This bias is reinforced by the brain’s preference for narratives over dry data, that’s well illustrated by the work of Elizabeth Loftus, whose studies on eyewitness testimony demonstrated how false details can be seamlessly integrated into memory, thereby distorting reality.

The challange then is to be more aware of what we chose to engage with.

The psychological perspective also explains that trust in fake news isn’t solely due to gullibility; it’s deeply tied to emotional resonance and social validation, people are more likely to share information that evokes strong reactions or reinforces group identity. These factors create a self-reinforcing cycle in which misinformation spreads rapidly, often outpacing efforts to correct it. The role of digital platforms in amplifying misinformation can’t be understated, their algorithms are designed to prioritise engagement over accuracy. Of course, it’s not always obvious, it’s often a relatively subtle shift. But what we’ve found is that these processes aren’t always conscious.
Correcting misinformation is further complicated by psychological resistance to revising beliefs, often known as the “backfire effect.” Studies show that attempts to debunk false information often strengthen the original belief, particularly when the correction is perceived as an attack on the individual’s worldview. This resistance is exacerbated by the emotional investment people have in their beliefs; they’re less receptive to disconfirming evidence. It’s not simply a technical problem, it’s a deeply human one, requiring strategies that acknowledge the emotional and social dimensions of belief formation.
